私の購入動機は秋端講座の参考図書に同名同著者のMclean,Adam A Treatise on Angel Magic（The Hermetic Research Trust,1982）が載っていたからです。しかし、私の購入したものとは出版社(註1)、出版年が異なるので同じものかは不明である。しかも、購入したものはコピーライトが1989年。私のはペーパーバックなので以前にハードカバーで出版していたのかもしれません。
編者は錬金術関係ではかなりの著名人で、Webページを訪ねた参加者も多いと思う。膨大な事実上の同人紙、私家出版が特に有名。
本書はMagnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworksの15冊目(#15)。MSS. Harleyは17世紀末に書かれた六巻のMSS.。通称はThe Treatise of Dr. Rudd。底本のMSS. 自体はオリジナルではなく1699‐1714にPeter Smartなる人物によって作成された写本とされている。
Dr. Ruddはときどき出てくる名前なので聞いた事のない参加者は頭の片隅に記憶していると良いと思う（パットのエノクの前書きあたりにも出ていた）。だだし、出てきても人物に関する情報はFrances Yatesの提供している情報以外は多分出てこないと思う。簡単に言うとDr. Ruddはディーのユークリッド関係の書籍を出版したThomas Ruddで、John Deeの息子Arthur Deeのサークルに所属していたと考えられている。Arthurは17世紀の錬金術などの秘教研究ではそれなりに有名らしい。
MSS. の研究内容は主として三つのグループに分類できる。へブル系（カバラ系）、Deeのエノク系、「天使の九階層、身に見える形にするためのそれらの祈り」（"Nine Hierarchies of Angels and their Conjunction to Visible Appearance"）。編者は第三をディーとケリーの作業を髣髴させるとしている。
本の内容に目を転じるとエノクあり、魔方陣あり、シールあり、召喚文あり、72の神名から、悪魔の解説ありと1７世紀末から1８世紀のGD以前の魔術をこの一冊でほぼ概観できる（目次を全て引用したので参考にして下さい）。だだし、この本をバレットマグス等に比較した場合の特徴はエノクのタブレットが含まれる点にある。
難点は図版がMS. をそのままコピーしているのか時々読みにくい、それに筆記体だし。ラテン語の文章は訳していても単語は訳していない場合があり日本人にはちょっとつらいときがある。
なお、表紙は有名なブレイク（だったかな？）の堕天前のルシファーの絵。
